This review paper explores groundbreaking strategies to shrink the livestock sector's environmental footprint, a major contributor to greenhouse gases. It examines breeding advancements that consider emissions alongside production traits, including selective breeding and gene editing. The paper delves into novel feedstuffs like tannin-rich forages and manipulation of the rumen microbiome to curb methane emissions from ruminant animals. It highlights the benefits of silvipastoral systems for enhanced production, reduced reliance on external feed, improved soil health, and increased carbon storage. Innovative manure management techniques like anaerobic digestion and nutrient recovery are presented as methods to transform waste into a resource. Finally, the paper explores the rise of alternative proteins like plant-based meat, cellular agriculture, and insect protein as solutions to reduce meat consumption and its environmental impact. By emphasizing collaboration among farmers, policymakers, and consumers, this paper paves the way for a sustainable future for the livestock sector

Conclusion

The livestock industry, essential for global food security, faces a significant challenge due to its substantial greenhouse gas emissions. Prioritizing emissions reduction in breeding programs can significantly decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Exploring alternative feed sources and employing feed additives can reduce methane production and enhance feed efficiency. Innovative approaches like anaerobic digestion and composting can transform manure into valuable resources. Plant-based alternatives and cellular agriculture offer promising options to reduce meat consumption and its associated environmental impact. By embracing these innovative solutions and fostering collaboration, the livestock sector can chart a path towards a more sustainable future. By mitigating its environmental impact, the livestock sector can continue to provide vital protein sources for billions while protecting our planet for generations to come
