Evaluation of in vitro Anti-cancer Potential of Macrosolen parasiticus Stem

Abstract

Cancer remains a significant global health challenge, necessitating the search for new and effective therapeutic agents. This study evaluates the in vitro anticancer potential of Macrosolen parasiticus stem extracts by assessing its phytochemical profile, cytotoxic effects. Phytochemical screening of different extracts revealed the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, phytosterols, fixed oils and fats, phenolic compounds, tannins, proteins, and flavonoids in varying proportions. The cytotoxicity of the extracts was evaluated using brine shrimp lethality bioassay and in vitro assays on Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma (EAC) cells, MCF-7 (human breast adenocarcinoma), U343 (human neuronal glioblastoma), and A549 (human lung adenocarcinoma) cells through MTT and SRB assays. The aqueous extract exhibited a lower LC50 value (90 µg/ml) compared to the ethanolic extract (120 µg/ml) in the brine shrimp lethality bioassay, indicating a higher cytotoxic potential. In vitro assays demonstrated that both ethanolic and aqueous extracts exhibited significant cytotoxic effects against cancer cells, with dose-dependent cytotoxicity observed across all cell lines. The aqueous extract displayed higher cytotoxicity in comparison to the ethanolic extract, with notable effects against MCF-7, U343, and A549 cells

The results of this research could contribute to the growing field of plant-based anticancer therapies and provide valuable insights for future drug development
